18 Month Check-Up

Ella had her 18 month check-up with Dr. Trumbull today. I'll say again, we LOVE our pediatrician!! Anyways, the visit was traumatic to say the least (not because of the doctor!). Ella was scared to death of him and pretty much screamed the entire time. Dr. Trumbull said that's pretty common for 18 month checks and it should be better next time (is this true or was he just saying it to make me feel better?) She weighed in at 21 lbs. (25th percentile) and was 32 in. (60th percentile). Her head was in the 80th percentile this time! She's got a big noggan now! Normally it's in the 40th-50th. Her brains must have had a growth spurt. ;-) Anyways, two weeks ago she was disagnosed with a double ear infection and unfortunately the antibiotics didn't quite take care of it so she had an antibiotic shot today and will start a stronger oral antibiotic tomorrow. We'll go back in two weeks for an ear check and to get her 18 month shots (she couldn't have them today because of the antibiotics). But, overall, he said she looks great.

We talked a little bit about discipline and about moving her to a big-girl bed. Keith and I have said that we would like to do it a couple of months before the baby gets here but Dr. Trumbull said he thinks that's too early and to wait until a few months after the baby arrives. He said we'll probably have more issues with her staying in bed if we do it too early. What do you experienced mommies think? Advice on that would be great!

Hi Suzanne -

We haven't met, but I knew Keith in high school and I've been following your blog for a while. Ella is beautiful!

Our son Ian was 2-1/2 when we moved him to his big boy bed, so he was a bit older than Ella. I was 6 or 7 months pregnant with Noah. We went on a business trip with Brandon to CA and let him sleep in one of the double beds in our room by himself. When we got back home we put him on a double mattress on the floor for several weeks before putting the mattresses on a frame. I seem to remember him getting out of bed some, but not too bad.

A month of so ago we had a car accident and I suffered whiplash. I was unable to lift Noah for a week so we had to move him out of his crib (at 21 months). His crib converts to a toddler bed so we went to Target and bought a mesh rail to keep him from falling out. He has done GREAT! He stays in bed great once we put him down for the night and has only gotten out of bed once.

The situations are a bit different, but maybe it will help a little.

Congratulations on the pregnancy!

In my experience the longer in the crib the better! Even when my kids were two they totally wouldn't stay in bed. My vote? Leave her in the crib if possible (unless she starts climbing out and then for safety get rid of the crib!) Love the pics! Amy

I couldn't wait for Katelyn to go to a big girl bed! Not sure why - just thought I was ready for that stage! Mistake! Once she was in a twin bed (after much coaxing) there was not turning back and the game changed completely. It was very difficult keeping her in bed which started the very bad habit of Bart having to lay down with her to get her to sleep (still a problem at age 3 1/2). When she wakes up in the middle of the night she wants to get in the bed with us. Next time around I definitely won't be as eager unless Owen is trying to climb out or something like that. Enjoy this final "containment" stage! :) Baby Dos will be in a bassinet for a while.

Our Pediatrician also said that "doctor fright" was completely normal and was more shocked that Claire does not freak out when we take her. We switched Claire to a big girl bed around 16 months because she was climbing out of her big crib and fell very hard several times. We were afraid she was going to break an arm! She has done GREAT with it (even though it is just a toddler bed). She stays in bed for the most part and never gets out of her bed during the night. I won't lie, the transition was tough for about a week and I can't imagine doing it with a newborn in the house! Every family is different so just make a decision that you think will be best for you and your family!! Good Luck!!!
